More info

Since the eighteenth century ships were flying the flag Blanquirroja Cantabria, as reflected in the title of town Santander in 1755. Also, the banner is depicted in a painting by Joseph Vallespín Santander, on the famous battle of Vargas held on November 3, 1833 during the First Carlist War. That day had come from Santander royalist troops to halt the advance of the Carlist side, losing them the opportunity to become stronger in the north of the peninsula and may vary substantially the course of history. In the painting shows how a group of soldiers Elizabethan urban militias of the city attack the forces of the pretender to the throne of Spain blanquirrojos carrying banners, which suggests that by then the current flag of Cantabria had transcended its scope marine origin.
