A bit of History

Narciso Lopez used this same flag to carry out in 1850 the insurrection, which resulted in failure, being executed by the Spanish authorities after he was captured. It was the coastal town of Cárdenas (Matanzas) who first saw the splendor of the Lone Star flag, hoisted on May 19, 1851 in taking the city by the Cuban rebels.

A year after the start of the Ten Years War, met the first Constituent Assembly of the Republic of Cuba in Arms in Guaimaro, Camaguey Province. The debate focused between two flags of great symbolism, the Demajagua created by Carlos Manuel de Cespedes to kick off the War of Independence, and Lone Star Narciso Lopez, this being chosen as Narciso Lopez was the one who had taken the first step for the freedom of Cuba. The flag of the Demajagua was not discarded, but instead it was put into the sessions of the House and preserved as a national treasure.

On the morning of May 20, 1902, opening day of the Republic, General Maximo Gomez had the honor to hoist this flag on the pole of the Castillo de los Tres Reyes del Morro, Havana, sealing with this act the end of the Cuban Revolution, its wars of independence and at the same time justifying the sacrifice that many made to make this dream a reality.

Both the national flag and the shield was designed by Miguel Teurbe Toulon. The design specifications of both were established by the first President of Cuba, Tomas Estrada Palma, by decree, April 21, 1906 and have remained unchanged since then.
