The FGNE, with direct dependence on the General Command of the Marine Infantry as Chief of the Marine Infantry Force, constitutes the fundamental unit of the capacity of Naval Special Navy War and its contribution to joint special operations.

Special Naval Warfare (GNE) is defined as the set of special operations that are executed, mainly, in the maritime, maritime -terrestrial or in support of naval operations. It is therefore a specialization of Special Operations that requires being able to perform all kinds of special operations, based on the Unit at sea, which requires skills and characteristics of unique materials and does not exclude the ability to operate in the terrestrial environment. .

The FGNE is qualified to carry out all the doctrinal tasks of Special Operations. The capacities of the FGNE are increased by the action of the crews and aircraft of the Navy Aircraft Fleet qualified for Special Air Operations and the support of submarines and ships and of the Specialized Support Group (GAES) composed of units of the Marine Tercio de Armada Infantry Brigade and the Protection Force that provide complementary capabilities.
