Original ceramic mug with the coat of arms of the Order of Alcántara, one of the four military orders of Spain.
A little history about this Order:
Orden de Alcántara is a military order created in the year 1154 in the Kingdom of León, and which still exists today. It is one of the four great Spanish military Orders, the other three being those of Santiago, Calatrava and Montesa.
After its conquest to the Muslims, the defense of the city of Alcántara was entrusted to the Order of Calatrava in 1214, but four years later they resigned due to the distance to Calatrava. Then Alfonso IX de León entrusted the defense to the newly formed order of the "Knights of Julian de Pereiro" in exchange for a certain dependence on filiation with regard to the order of Calatrava, hence they also adopted the Cistercian rule.
